27 sep Module Voeding en Biotechnologie – “The Good, the Bad and the Complex”
In oktober zullen Amgen Master Teacher Fellow, Declan Cathcart (ABE Ierland) en Science on Stage partner Andrea van Bruggen (U-Talent) een pilot van de door hen ontwikkelde module Voeding en Biotechnologie – “The Good, the Bad and the Complex” aan leerlingen in Utrecht verzorgen.

A new biotechnology module is being developed through a collaboration between Amgen Master Teacher Fellow, Declan Cathcart (IRL) and Science on Stage partner Andrea van Bruggen (NL). The two teachers met at the European Science on Stage (SonS) Festival in Portugal in 2019 and began collaborating on a SonS Joint Project early this year. Declan is visiting the Netherlands in October, and he and Andrea will run a two-day workshop to pilot the activities with Andrea’s students, which will be hosted at the U-talent labs at the University of Utrecht. Entitled “The Good, the Bad and the Complex”, the module is a series of activities under the theme of biotechnology and food. The project aims to develop resources to improve students’ conceptual understanding and investigative laboratory skills by framing the activities in an inquiry-based, structured problem-solving approach in real-world contexts. These activities include: investigating lactic acid bacteria in fermented food; PCR-based diagnostics for the detection of Shiga toxin-producing E.coli (STEC) strains; bioinformatics/proteomics activities looking at proteins from STECs.
